Does schema markup actually help you show up in AI answers?

Published · By Mario Russo

Probably less than you've been told. In the best controlled test we've seen, Ahrefs found no meaningful citation lift after pages that were already being cited added schema, and a separate experiment found AI systems ignored JSON-LD during live page retrieval. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. Schema is still worth having for search engines, but clear visible text and consistent facts should come first.

What did the controlled test find?

Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, and compared them with 4,000 matched pages that never did. Relative to those controls, ChatGPT citations moved +2.2% and Google AI Mode +2.4%, neither distinguishable from zero. Google AI Overviews moved -4.6%, a small drop the authors couldn't explain.

Their conclusion was blunt: "Adding schema produced no major uplift in citations on any platform."

Why might that test not apply to my business?

Those pages were already heavily cited, and the study measured only 30 days after each change. A small local business is in a different position: often not cited at all. Ahrefs says schema might still help pages that AI systems don't yet see get crawled, parsed, or indexed, but that its data can't test this. So "no lift for popular pages" isn't the same as "useless for you". It's simply unproven.

Do AI assistants even read schema?

Ahrefs cites a searchVIU experiment across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode that found: "During direct retrieval, every system extracted only visible HTML content." That's one experiment, and it doesn't cover everything. Search engines do read structured data, and Google describes it as giving "explicit clues about the meaning of a page", so it can still reach AI answers indirectly through search indexes and knowledge graphs.

The practical reading: a fact that exists only in your markup may never be seen. A fact in your visible text can be.

Why does W3Mkt still install it?

Because it's cheap, it's useful for classic search, and it forces every fact about your business into one consistent, validated record. Google's guidance is also clear that markup should match what people can see on the page, so doing it properly improves the page too. We used to describe structured data more strongly than this evidence supports, and we've corrected that across the site.

What should I do instead of relying on schema?

Put your services, service area, hours, and credentials in plain text on your pages. Keep your listings consistent. Build real reviews. Let the crawlers in. Add schema that mirrors all of that, then measure what assistants say, rather than assuming any single tactic worked. Our free AI-Readiness Check will show you which of these actually applies to your business.
